Josephus a Jewish historian believed there was a connection between the twelve stones in Aaron's breastplate, the twelve months of the year, and the twelve signs of the zodiac. Over the last few centuries practice has shifted from keeping and wearing a single birthstone to keeping 12 birthstones and wearing one a month.

Modern lists of birthstones vary with civilizations and have little to do with the breastplate stones.
